3 Website Mistakes Bookkeepers Make (And How to Fix Them)
Let’s talk websites. More specifically, let’s talk about why so many bookkeeping and accounting websites don’t actually convert.
They exist. They’re up. But they're not getting booked. 😬
Here are the 3 biggest mistakes I see bookkeepers make with their sites and exactly what to do instead if you want more of the right clients coming through.
🚫 MISTAKE #1: It Reads Like a Résumé, Not a Solution
Listing certifications, years of experience, or a long list of services? That’s not what gets someone to click “Book Now.”
Most common version of this mistake: Explaining what you do instead of why it matters.
Here’s the boring (but common) way:
-
“We offer monthly account reconciliation and chart of accounts setup to ensure accurate transaction classification.”
-
“Our services include journal entries, expense categorization, and general ledger support.”
-
“We provide accounts receivable management, including aged receivables reconciliation and invoicing workflows.”
😴 Yawn... your client doesn’t know what half of those words mean, and definitely doesn’t know why it matters.
✅ Instead, try:
-
“We make sure your books are right and up to date, so you always know where your money’s at (and how much to pay yourself!).”
-
“Tired of wondering if your clients have actually paid you? Let’s fix that.”
-
“No more tax season panic or wondering what you missed, we help you stay organized and stress-free all year long.”
If you're stuck, flip the sentence. Ask yourself: “What does this service actually do for my client?” Then say that.
🚫 MISTAKE #2: No Clear Next Step
So many sites are like, “Here’s what I offer… okay bye!” No form. No CTA. No guidance. Just a floating "Contact" page.
✅ Instead: Tell visitors exactly what to do next.
-
“Book a free consult”
-
“Fill out this quick intake form”
-
“See if you're a good fit”
Every single page should lead them to the next step. No guessing. No digging. Just a clear, obvious path to working with you.
🚫 MISTAKE #3: It's Trying to Be Professional… but It's Just Vague
You’re not boring! But your site might be.
Phrases like “tailored financial solutions” or “supporting your success” sound fine but don’t actually say anything.
✅ Instead: Be specific. Show your personality.
“I keep your receipts from turning into a second job. Clean books, clear reports, and zero hassle, even if half your receipts are currently in the glove box.”
Let people feel the energy of what it’s like to work with you. Let them know you get them.
